Two local representatives discuss their reactions to President Barack Obama's health care address to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday night.

Obama faced the myths head-on, capps says

Rep. Lois Capps, D-Santa Barbara, a registered nurse, has consistently supported President Barack Obama’s plan and the so-called public option, saying it will encourage competition and keep costs low.

Capps represents San Luis Obispo and coastal parts of the county.

“(The speech) worked now because he debunked several of the myths that have been bandied about over the last month or so,” Capps said Wednesday night.

“He did set the record straight. We can quibble about, should he have done this earlier, but we’ve been debating this for a long time now and the time now is for action.”

President’s plan still flawed, McCarthy says

Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield, has criticized the bill, HR 3200, arguing that it does not allow Americans enough choice in selecting their own health care coverage and fails to take citizens’ concerns into account.

McCarthy represents the North County and parts of Arroyo Grande and Nipomo.

“I saw the president come out and not give anything new. He’s going to try and pass HR 3200 and I’m opposed to that,” McCarthy said after watching Obama’s Wednesday night address to Congress. “What I heard tonight was the same as what was going on before. It’s just a bigger push to pass HR 3200.”
