Los Osos

Agricultural inspectors have determined that nursery and farming operations in Los Osos are free of the light brown apple moth.

This means that growers and nurserymen in Los Osos can continue to sell and transport their products, said Bob Lilley, county agricultural commissioner.

“At this time, there are no nursery or farming operations prohibited from selling or transporting plant material within the county, and we encourage San Luis Obispo County residents to purchase local agricultural products and plants from local nurseries,” he said.

Los Osos was placed under state and federal quarantine Aug. 18 after five light brown apple moths were discovered there. The moth is an invasive species from Australia that can damage hundreds of plants, particularly during the caterpillar stage.

SLO County

A nine-member advisory committee for the Carrizo Plain National Monument has been reappointed by Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar.

The committee advises the Bureau of Land Management on resource management issues in the sprawling monument in San Luis Obispo County’s southeastern corner. Four of the members, including the chairman, are from San Luis Obispo County.

They are: Dale Kuhnle, Santa Margarita rancher; Chairman Neil Havlik, city of San Luis Obispo natural resources manager; Jim Patterson, county supervisor from Atascadero; and Robert Pavlik, San Luis Obispo environmental planner.

Other members are: Ellen Cypher, Bakersfield ecologist; Michael Khus-Zarate, Fresno educator; Raymond Watson, Kern County supervisor from Bakersfield; Carl Twisselman, McKittrick rancher; and Raymond Hatch, former mayor of Taft.

Morro Bay

Millions of dollars in federal economic stimulus funding will help pay for dredging Morro Bay harbor.

The Army Corps of Engineers earlier this summer awarded a $7.9 million contract to AIS Construction of Carpinteria to perform dredging operations.

The funding is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act passed by Congress in February.

Dredging the harbor allows commercial fishermen and recreational boaters to navigate the harbor safely.

Dredging is expected to begin by early October.

Paso Robles

Goodwill Industries of San Luis Obispo County has a Paso Robles donation center for the first time in two years.

The center is now accepting donated goods of used clothing and household items of 50 pounds or less.

Paso Robles has long had a Goodwill retail store at 1020 Park St., but the space doesn’t accept donation items, officials said.

The new drop-off site in the Alliance Industrial Plaza at 825 Riverside Ave., Space 11, is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days and is closed for lunch daily from 12:30 to 1 p.m.

The organization previously ran a donation trailer in the Walmart parking lot at Woodland Plaza II on Niblick Road, but had to vacate the space after Walmart enforced its no soliciting policy, officials said.

For more information or to schedule a free home pickup for large items, call 544-0542.
