Harmony
Organizers hope “A Day in Harmony” delivers a message to postal officials that locals want the Harmony post office to reopen.
Glass-blowing demonstrations, arts and crafts, pottery works, wine tasting, historic tours and a flea market are planned for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday in the historic North Coast hamlet three miles south of Cambria.
Opened in 1914, the Harmony post office closed in April 2008. The U.S. Postal Service said its studies showed the historic Creamery building housing the office was unsafe.
But, officially, the office remains in bureaucratic limbo, not yet officially closed.
Box holders now pick up their mail at a nearby metal stand with a number of locked boxes.
The Creamery has since been studied and tested, and owners have sent a proposal to postal officials, according to Aarika Wells of Harmony.
“The object of our campaign,” Wells said, “is to show a virtual flood of public support, a good old-fashioned outcry” saying people want the office open again.
She said she has about 3,000 signatures on a petition urging that the office reopen.
