Cal Poly
The university will not be affected by a recent Cal State University decision not to accept admissions applications for winter or spring quarters.
Applications filed after July 6 for winter or spring quarter to a Cal State University institution won’t be accepted as part of an effort to close more than $500 million in budget shortfalls, CSU officials said.
Students applying to some of the 23 CSU campuses statewide could have to change their planning, but Cal Poly officials say that the university doesn’t accept students in the winter or spring quarters now.
The CSU is hoping to reduce enrollment by a total of 40,000 students for 2010-2011.
Officials are considering employee furloughs, possible student fee increases, salary and hiring freezes, and restrictions on travel and purchases, according to CSU officials.
The CSU Board of Trustees will consider the overall plan to address student fees, enrollment and employee furlough plans at its July 21 meeting, officials said in a statement.

The southbound on-ramp to Highway 101 at Highway 41 will be temporarily closed for up to five months beginning Monday.
In addition, motorists traveling on southbound Highway 101 will be diverted onto the new center bridge over Highway 41.
This will allow Caltrans to prepare for construction of a new southbound bridge over Highway 41 as part of the Highway 101/41 Interchange Project.
Motorists will be detoured to the Highway 101 southbound onramps at Curbaril Avenue and Traffic Way. Electronic message boards and detour signs will assist motorists in moving around the project area.
The contractor for the $17 million project is Granite Construction of San Luis Obispo.
The project remains on schedule and is expected to be completed by the summer of 2010, according to Caltrans.
For more details, call Caltrans District 5 at 549-3318 or visit the District 5 Web site at www.dot.ca.gov/dist05/maint/road/upslo.htm.

In an effort to find children who qualify for health care but have not enrolled, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has targeted as much as $40 million to identify and enroll these youngsters and their families.
“We know that there are thousands of children on the Central and South Coasts who are eligible but for a variety of reasons, aren’t yet enrolled,” said Rep. Lois Capps, D-Santa Barbara.
“These grants will help community organizations, tribal organizations, (and) state and local governments identify and enroll these children so they can access this critical health care,” Capps said.
The grants are designed to lead the children to the Children’s Health Insurance Program, which is a partnership between federal and state governments, as well as state Medicaid.
The move is the first cycle of outreach funding under the CHIP Reauthorization Act.
