National summer learning day: Kids soak up sun — and skills

closeBetween face painting and examining the parts of a fire truck, Paso Robles youngsters settled down Thursday to hear stories read by community members for National Summer Learning Day, established this year by President Barack Obama.
Peoples’ Self-Help Housing’s Youth Education Enhancement Program took part in the exercise along with numerous youth organizations and libraries throughout the county.
The national event is designed to keep kids’ skills sharp during summer vacation.
The Youth Education Enhancement Program is a free service for students in kindergarten through sixth grade who live at Canyon Creek Apartments at 400 Oak Hill Road.
Tips for parents
Parents can keep their child’s skills sharp this summer through the following suggestions by the National Center for Summer Learning at Johns Hopkins University, based in Baltimore.
• Practice math daily by measuring items around the house or yard, tracking daily temperatures, adding and subtracting at the grocery store or learning fractions while cooking.
• Play outside and limit TV and video games — exercise contributes to healthy development.
• Do a community service project to teach the benefits of volunteerism.

- Don't repeat the same comment over and over. We heard you the first time.
- Do not use the commenting system for advertising. That's spam and it isn't allowed.
- Don't use all capital letters. That's akin to yelling and not appreciated by the audience.
You should also know that The Tribune does not screen comments before they are posted. You are more likely to see inappropriate comments before our staff does, so we ask that you click the "report abuse" button to submit those comments for moderator review. You also may notify us via email at webmaster@sanluisobispo.com. Note the headline on which the comment is made and tell us the profile name of the user who made the comment. Remember, comment moderation is subjective. You may find some material objectionable that we won't and vice versa.
If you submit a comment, the username of your account will appear along with it.
