North County

A Los Angeles man died in a Thursday morning accident that closed Highway 46 East between Highway 41 in San Luis Obispo County and Highway 33 in Kern County for several hours in the early morning.

Thomas Corell, 56, from Los Angeles, was driving a 2008 BMW west at an unknown speed on Highway 46 East, east of Kecks Road in Kern County, when he crossed the line into the eastbound traffic about 2:05 a.m. and hit a semi truck head on, according to the CHP.

The truck, driven by 46-year-old Mladen Krmpotic of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, was carrying “a type of sludge,” CHP spokesman Michael Duenas said, that spilled onto the road. Officials closed the highway to determine whether the material was hazardous. When they established it wasn’t, he said, they cleaned up and reopened the highway shortly before 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

Krmpotic suffered minor injuries, Duenas said.

SLO County

People who want to help solve the county’s homeless problem are being asked to apply for a newly created homeless oversight committee. The Board of Supervisors created the Homeless Services Oversight Council last month.

Committee members will work with the many groups, public and private, already attacking the growing number of homeless county residents.

They will develop policy, seek funds, gather data, educate the public, and help provide services, among many other tasks.

The Board of Supervisors and each of the seven cities in the county have named their representatives to the commission.

However, many openings remain, including two community members and one each from the faith, academic, health provider and law enforcement communities.

The committee also will include three members from nonprofit service providers, two low-income housing developers, three from local businesses, and two from county government.

To apply or for more information, contact Dana Lilley, supervising planner, at 781-5715 or dlilley@co.slo.ca.us.

Applications must be submitted to the Clerk-Recorder’s office, 1055 Monterey St., San Luis Obispo, no later than July 24.
