The city of Grover Beach is gearing up to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its incorporation.

The city will reach its half-century mark Dec. 21. Officials are organizing several activities for the anniversary, including a self-guided tour of historic businesses.

Community members are encouraged to send in their old photographs of the city, which was called Grover City until 1992, when residents voted to change the name to Grover Beach. Some of those photos will be used to create posters to celebrate the anniversary.

Once the posters are complete, they will be displayed in historic and prominent parts of the city. A tour map will be available at City Hall for citizens to use as a guide around the city.

For details, call the Grover Beach Parks and Recreation Department at 473-4580.

Sea life on screen

A movie night that shows off footage of local sea life will be shown at La Perla Del Mar in Shell Beach on July 10.

The 45-minute, high-definition movie was made by local biologist Terry Lilley from more than 300 hours of underwater video footage. The movie shows reefs and marine life between Cayucos and Pismo Beach.

Another documentary on sea life in Hawaii will be shown afterward. The event is sponsored by Cal Poly, the local chapter of the Surfrider Foundation and Save Our Seas.

Lilley said he hopes the video will help more of the county coast become part of the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary, which protects marine life in those areas and prevents oil drilling.

The event begins at 6 p.m. at 205 Windward Ave., and it costs $5.

It’s a green evening

A mixer to promote green practices in local businesses will be held at the Avila Bay Athletic Club.

The Solstice Green Mixer will be held July 9 to promote healthy living. It costs $10 or is free to anyone in the Green Directory. All proceeds will be donated to SLO Green Build.

The event is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at 6699 Bay Laurel Place and includes refreshments.

Pier-to-pier race

The Annual Stride with the Tide run in Pismo Beach is scheduled for Aug. 8. The 5K run starts at the Pismo Beach pier and heads south to a turnaround point and then finishes at the pier. There will be categories for age groups beginning with 12 years and under and then continuing to an 80-year-old-plus bracket.

The run is sponsored by the Pismo Beach Recreation Department and the San Luis Distance Club. To sign up, call 773-7063.
