The Paso Robles Amateur Radio Club covered part of the Templeton High School’s old practice field with equipment and antennas this weekend as it competed in the annual American Radio Relay League Field Day contest.
The 24-hour exercise had the 20 to 30 North County club members operating ham radio stations to talk with other hams around the United States and Canada behind the high school at 1200 S. Main St.
The group, which ran its equipment on a generator, camped there overnight.
The contest is designed as a practice run for establishing emergency communications systems, and thousands of amateur radio operators participate nationwide, according to www.arrl.org.
Other local amateur radio clubs include the Estero Radio Club and the Cal Poly Amateur Radio Club.
