Comments (0) | Provisions in a farm bill in Congress could make the county and residents of Los Osos eligible for loans and grants to defray the cost of building the community’s sewage treatment and collection plant.
If signed into law, the agriculture appropriations bill would make Los Osos eligible for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s water and waste disposal program. The sewer system is expected to cost $165 million and will be a severe financial burden for senior citizens and others on fixed incomes in the community.
San Luis Obispo County’s two congressional representatives, Lois Capps, D-Santa Barbara, and Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield, have praised the bipartisan effort to include the designation for Los Osos.
The bill must still go before a vote of the full House, the Senate must pass companion legislation, and President Obama must sign it into law.
