Elks name four Teens of the Year

The Oceano/Five Cities Elks Lodge No. 2504 recently awarded $2,000 to each of four Teenagers of the Year.

The recent high school graduates are Jill Chanley and Ryan Wendell of Arroyo Grande High School and Eric Sandberg and Rebecca

Fisher-McGinty of Nipomo High School.

Tony Ulbarri, the Lodge’s chairman of scholarships and youth activities, and Barbara Kostowal, the “Exalted Ruler of the Lodge,” presented the awards.

The four were selected from the previous school year’s Teenagers of the Month winners.

Grover plants a low-demand garden

The public is invited to tour Grover Beach’s Water Conservation Garden, which was recently installed in the large planters in front of Ramona Garden Park at 993 Ramona Ave. in Grover Beach.

City staff coordinated the project, and Mission Pacifica Landscape Design, a Grover Beach firm, put in the plants.

The city will use the garden as an example to help residents develop gardens with low-water demand.

Low-water and drought-tolerant plants include the Santa Barbara daisy, yarrow, Australian fuchsia, Spanish lavender, cape rush, Berkeley sedge, blue hibiscus, penstemon, tea tree, New Zealand flax, Autumn moor grass, lamb’s ears, manzanita, euphorbia “Tiny Tim” and peppermint tree.
