San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s deputies gathered Tuesday to remember Deputy Harvey Stahl, who died June 9, 1961, while trying to arrest a man suspected of committing a series of crimes, including burglary, robbery, assault and kidnapping, in Creston.
Stahl had attempted to stop William Jefferson Ford, 34, on Old River Road near Atascadero when Ford shot him twice in the head with a .22 caliber handgun.
Stahl fired five shots from his duty handgun before he died on the side of the road, according to records. Ford then stole the handgun.
Ford was arrested about two hours later about a half-mile from the scene.
Deputy Stahl, 40, had been a deputy for four years at the time of his death and previously was an Oakland police officer.
Stahl's death was the second in the line of duty since the Sheriff’s Department was created in 1850.
