An Atascadero man accused of molesting a 4-year-old girl is expected to be sentenced to 10 years in prison Jan. 21 after changing his not-guilty plea, according to court records.
Doyle Gibbons, 71, changed his plea to no contest — which results in a conviction without the admission of guilt — to a felony count of committing a lewd act on a child, according to court records of the Dec. 30 proceedings.
As part of a plea bargain, four remaining felony counts were dismissed.
Gibbons was arrested Oct. 21 at his home on Navajoa Avenue after the girl at the center of the case was taken to a hospital and someone reported the abuse.
Atascadero police investigators learned that he had been investigated in 2000 for alleged child molestation, but there was not enough evidence to file charges.
During the current investigation, detectives gathered enough evidence to charge Gibbons in both the 2000 case and this recent case.
In addition to his state prison sentence, Gibbons would be required to register as a sex offender for life, according to court records.
