Mother dies in Highway 58 wreck

Susan Cox of Paso Robles swerved off the road; her 22-year-old daughter suffered minor injuries

By Leslie Parrilla

A Paso Robles woman died early Saturday after the pickup she was driving swerved off Highway 58 and rolled over several times, authorities said.

The incident killed Susan Lynn Cox, 46, and left her daughter, Krys Carminati, 22, also of Paso Robles, with minor injuries about 6:55 a. m., according to CHP officials.

Cox was driving a Toyota pickup west on Highway 58 about nine miles east of Shell Creek Road at an unknown speed, according to the CHP. She was driving her daughter to Paso Robles before going to work at a Chevron gas station there.

For unknown reasons, Cox drove straight when the roadway curved slightly to the left. She overcorrected to the left, crossed both lanes and crashed through a fence before the truck rolled several times. Neither one was wearing a seat belt, and both were thrown through the windshield, CHP officials said.

Cox was pronounced dead at the scene and Carminati was taken to Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton, the CHP said. Hospital officials said Saturday that Carminati was not at the hospital, an indication that she may have been treated and released.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them.

Cox worked as an assistant manager at the Chevron on Niblick Road, where she had been employed for about 10 years, according to a co-worker who asked to be identified only as Josh.

“I just found out this afternoon,” he said. “I was stunned because I didn’t know what was going on. ... Nobody expects a person to go this way.”
