Construction has begun on the project to turn the intersection of Morro Bay Boulevard and Quintana Road in Morro Bay into a roundabout.

The City Council in February gave the final OK for the remaking of the busy intersection near Highway 1 — one of Morro Bay’s main entrances.

Instead of regulating traffic with stop signs or signals, roundabouts move traffic in a one-way circle in which drivers can exit onto their destination street.

The aim of the project is to ease traffic at an intersection some city officials say is overbuilt.

The project includes replacing some aging water and sewer lines under the road, which is occurring now. Motorists can expect some delays. The city hopes to have the roundabout complete by the end of May.

City officials have said there are no plans so far for additional roundabouts.
