District’s steps studied so others may follow

The inclusion of Coast Unified School District among the state’s elite — nicknamed by some as the “super seven” of school districts — won’t have much direct effect on North Coast students or teachers. However, the district’s selection — deemed an honor, according to officials —reinforces expectations that the district’s students and schools will continue to flourish, even in these lean economic times when budgets are stripped to the bone. A statewide statistical analysis placed Coast among the state’s top “high performing” districts in providing education to all students, including those who don’t speak English, require special education or come from low-income families.

The Friends are currently raising the matching funds needed to make possible the opening of new Cambria Library. A column updating the status of that drive and explaining the many ways in which the library — an information hub — is of use and value to the community for reasons of education, entertainment, socialization and economics, among other things, will appear monthly until completion of the fund drive. For more information, go to www.cambriafol.org.

My Turn: Mother Nature’s random child

“New satellite data … show the Pacific Ocean may be undergoing a dramatic climate shift — much longer-lived than any El Niño — that could alter global weather patterns, disrupt fish stocks and perhaps lead Southern California into decades of drier than normal weather. Scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, which released the data, predict a major impact, although others argue that prediction is premature.”
