Delays due north of Ragged Point

M otorists traveling on Highway 1 a mile north of Ragged Point may find weekday delays of up to 20 minutes, Caltrans has announced. Work installing new drains is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 2 p.m. Fridays. The project is expected to be complete by February, weather permitting.

During the project’s second phase, the highway may need to be completely closed at night.

Thrift sale donations aid young scientists

Donations of items for a thrift sale are sought to help pay for Cambria Grammar School fourth-graders to attend science camp at Rancho El Chorro.

Baked goods, craft items, housewares,

clothing, furniture and other donations (but not broken items or computer parts) may be dropped off in front of the school auditorium from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16, and from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20.

The sale will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at the grammar school, 3223 Main St.

Troop holiday gift box drive underway

T he Cambria American Legion Post No. 432 Troop Support Unit (TS2) has kicked off its annual drive to involve the local community in providing Christmas and holiday gifts for local men and women serving in the military.

There are several ways to support the program. In exchange for a donation of $10 to cover shipping, donors receive a box and a list of suggested gifts and supplies. For a donation of $30, and the most popular choice, the American Legion will do the shopping and shipping. Or donors may send a gift card as a stocking stuffer to a loved one, letting them know that a package has been sent in their name.

Approximately 75 local students will participate in the packing over 12,000 individual items beginning at 10 a.m. Nov. 21 in the Veterans Memorial Building. Every child in Cambria also has the opportunity to provide a personal note or greeting card that will be placed in one of the boxes. Children wishing to participate may contact Cambria Honorary Mayor Max Stuczynski at 927-1776 or e-mail

mstuczynski2@gmail.com. Donations may be mailed to the Cambria American Legion, at P.O. Box 697, Cambria 93428. Checks should be made out the American Legion Post No. 432, with “TS2” in the memo section.

Afghanistan video screening on Sunday

“Rethinking Afghanistan,” a video presentation sponsored by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church of Cambria and Central Coast Clergy and Laity for Justice, will be shown at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, in St. Paul’s Parish Hall, 2700 Eton Road, Cambria.

The program is intended to stimulate discussion regarding possible strategies and outcomes relating to US military involvement in Afghanistan. Admission is free.

Castle Theater to host movie night

Local education supporters hope really big-screen pictures will be a really big boost for local students as “Movie Night” returns to the Hearst Castle Theater at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20 and 21.

The Cambria Education Foundation will join again with the state-of-the art theater in the Hearst Castle Visitor Center to show a pair of large-format films. This year’s features are “Dolphins” and “Hearst Castle: Building the Dream.”

“Hearst Castle Theater is thrilled to partner once again with the Cambria Education Foundation to support the schools in Cambria,” said Shane Wood, the theater’s general manager. “Last November, movie night brought crowds from all over the area for two wonderful evenings of sellout shows. We anticipate amazing attendance again this year and a lot of excitement for these two incredible films.”

Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under accompanied by an adult. All proceeds will directly benefit students and teachers in the Coast Unified School District. Tickets may be purchased at the Cambria Chamber of Commerce, 767 Main St., the Hearst Castle Theater, and at all Coast Unified School District libraries, or call 909- 0917 for details.

Holiday event calendar filling up

Event planners, donors and people mapping out their event schedules are

marking their calendars for upcoming holiday events. Among Cambria’s holiday highlights are:

The Community Presbyterian Church Craft Circle will sponsor its annual holiday bazaar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at the church, 2750 Yorkshire Drive. Hand-crafted items will include crocheted and knitted designs, custom quilts and afghans, custom jewelry and other one-of-a-kind handmade items. Homemade refreshments will be available.

The public is invited to attend the 29th annual Cambria Holiday Faire from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Cambria Veterans Memorial Building, 1000 Main St., Cambria. The sale features home and garden décor, baked goods, ornaments, jewelry and more. A portion of proceeds benefits Hospice Partners of the Central Coast.

Cambria’s free annual Thanksgiving Day dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 26, at the Veterans Memorial Building, 1000 Main St. Everybody is welcome to dine and enjoy fun and festivities. Volunteers, including from Vineyard Christian Fellowship and other churches, pull it all together. For details or to volunteer, call 927-4064.

Hospitality Night, Thursday, Dec. 3, is a downtown open house hosted by local businesses, many nonprofits also showcase their offerings to the community, such as the Cambria Historical Museum, Cambria Teen Center, Cambria Chorale, area schools and others. The RTA Otter Trolley will provide free shuttle rides between West and East Village from 5:30 to 9 p.m. For details, call the Cambria Chamber of Commerce at 927-3624.

Club to honor logo contest winner

The University Women of Cambria club is sponsoring a logo art competition. Winning students and their art will be honored at the club meeting beginning at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 16, at San Simeon Beach Bar &Grill in San Simeon.

Mrs. Johnson, Coast Union art teacher, has been receiving entries from Coast Union and Leffingwell High School. A panel of University Women who are themselves artists, will judge the entries. The first-place entry will become the logo of the University Women of Cambria.

The three top winners will receive gift cards to an art supply store.

Assembly candidate speaks to Republicans

Fourth District Supervisor Kacho Achadjian, a candidate for state assemblyman, spoke to 45 members of the Cambria Area Republican Women, Federated club at its October meeting at The Brambles Dinner House.

American Legion Post No. 432 Commander Ron Waltman talked about the Troop Support Services (TS2) program. A donation was made to the American Legion for boxes to be prepared and sent to local men and women serving overseas.

A donation was also made to the Cal Poly Republicans to support its effort to encourage students to be a part of the Republican Party. Also, new officers for 2010 were installed. —Cambria Area Republican Women, Federated
