Volunteers are wanted for the California Coastal Commission’s 30th annual Coastal Cleanup Day from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.
The event is the state’s largest volunteer effort to remove debris and trash that has accumulated on the coastline over the past year and draws tens of thousands of volunteers out annually, according to the Environmental Center of San Luis Obispo, which has organized the local effort since 2005.
Twenty-six local beaches from San Simeon to the Oceano Dunes will be included in the event, as will, for the first time, Lopez Lake.
Last year, more than 1,600 local volunteers removed more than 5,700 pounds of trash and recyclables from San Luis Obispo County shores. Statewide, nearly 60,000 volunteers picked up nearly 750,000 pounds of debris.
