Volunteers are signing up to return to dozens of San Luis Obispo County beaches for the 29th annual California Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday morning, Sept. 21. The beach and inland waterway cleanup is known as the state’s largest volunteer event.
Sponsored statewide by the Coastal Commission, the cleanup is organized locally by the Environmental Center of San Luis Obispo. Last year, nearly 2,800 pounds of trash and recyclables were removed from San Luis Obispo County beaches and creeks by more than 1,000 volunteers, according to ECOSLO. When combined with the International Coastal Cleanup, organized by the Ocean Conservancy and taking place on the same day, California Coastal Cleanup Day becomes part of one of the largest volunteer events in the world.
This year’s cleanup is set for 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at 28 beaches from San Simeon to the Oceano Dunes. Volunteers can register and get site information online at www.ecoslo.org, or call 544-1777 or email email@example.com for details.
