A Paso Robles High School student will represent San Luis Obispo County at the state Poetry Out Loud competition in March.
Alec Wingfield, 16, earned the top score Feb. 6 at the countywide Poetry Out Loud contest organized by the San Luis Obispo County Arts Council, Arts Obispo. Mission College Preparatory High senior John Hollander was the runner-up, said Lori Lerian, Arts Obispo program director.
Launched by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation in 2006, Poetry Out Loud encourages high schoolers to study, memorize and recite works by the likes of Maya Angelou and Carl Sandburg.
Students compete at a classroom level before advancing to schoolwide, county, state and national contests. They are judged on accuracy, articulation, physical presence and more.
Never miss a local story.
This year, more than 3,400 local students participated in Poetry Out Loud, with eight high schools sending their winners to the county competition. Participating schools included Atascadero High School, Lopez High in Arroyo Grande, Morro Bay High, Nipomo High, North County Christian School in Atascadero and San Luis Obispo High.
Wingfield will compete March 23 and 24 in Sacramento in hopes of proceeding to the national Poetry Out Loud competition in Washington, D.C., in late April.
