Cal Poly’s eighth CubeSat satellite was launched into space from Vandenberg Air Force Base earlier this month.
The small satellite, designed and built by students, launched Dec. 5 aboard the United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket.
The CubeSat program is experimenting with cell phone cameras that have collecting images from outer space.
NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory is sponsoring the satellite. The six-month mission also will help researchers better understand planetary weather, natural disasters and changing ecosystems.
