Three Cuesta College students brought an unloaded BB gun onto campus for a class project Wednesday, scaring some students and faculty who thought the weapon was real.
Several alarmed students reported that a female was walking through campus with a shotgun that day, but Cuesta police Sgt. Rob Schram said the weapon was just a prop for a video project featuring a bank robbery scene.
The group notified campus police when they came onto campus with the BB gun, Schram said, but not all students follow that procedure when they bring potentially dangerous items for presentations or projects.
“Typically we would hope faculty would inform the students to seek some sort of verification before bringing items that could cause a risk,” Schram said. “It’s really a common-sense thing, but for some people it just doesn’t rise to that level that they think it could be dangerous.”
Officers remained with the group until they finished filming.
