According to a news release, people have received calls from someone claiming to be an employee of Pacific Gas & Electric Co. or the IRS or another government agency who claims the resident has won a prize or is eligible for a government grant.
Instead of asking the resident to wire money, the scammer instructs the consumer to purchase a prepaid debit card and call them back with the card information.
The District Attorney’s Office says that prepaid cards are increasingly becoming the method of choice for such scams, and District Attorney’s Office representatives in the coming weeks will be visiting local stores that sell them to advise retailers of signs of possible victimization.
