The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office is warning of yet another telephone scam currently hitting area residents.
This one comes from people claiming to be from the IRS and appears to target seniors.
The department said in a news release Thursday that they've received about 10 reports of callers claiming that residents owe money to the agency and must immediately pay with a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer.
The callers are aggressive and will threaten the residents with jail time if they fail to pay, according to the release. They may even call back if hung up on.
The Sheriff’s Office reminds residents that federal agencies will never call to demand immediate payment, ask for debit or credit card information over the phone, or threaten to bring in law enforcement.
