Officers from three local police departments arrested 37 people in a three-day joint undercover prostitution sting.
Using both male and female undercover officers, members of the San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach and Arroyo Grande police departments targeted both alleged prostitutes and their customers, commonly known as “johns.”
Soliciting prostitution is a misdemeanor, but officers are also charging two of the people arrested with possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.
All of those arrested were taken into custody and booked in the County Jail.
In a news release Friday, San Luis Obispo police explained the operation by saying that although some may see prostitution as a victimless crime, local law enforcement has seen instances of underage females being held against their will and coerced into prostitution. None of the arrested was underage.
