The husband of an unlicensed home daycare facility operator in Nipomo was arrested Monday afternoon for allegedly sexually assaulting a 5-year-old child.
Detectives with the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office arrested Adam Lieja Aguirre, 66, and booked him into County Jail on suspicion of one felony count of sexual intercourse with a minor under 10 years old and one count of oral copulation. As of Tuesday afternoon, Aguirre remained in County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.
Aguirre was taken into custody after investigators served a search warrant at the home in the 100 block of East Tefft Street at about noon Monday, after getting information that a small, unlicensed daycare center was being operated at a Nipomo residence and that at least one child was sexually assaulted there over the last year, authorities said.
Sheriff’s Office spokesman Tony Cipolla said there was no evidence the wife was involved in any sexual misconduct. Investigators believe the home served five to six children at any given time, although because it was unlicensed, they did not know how long it was operating as a daycare center.

Cipolla said Community Care Licensing, a division of the California Department of Social Services, started an investigation into the facility Tuesday.
Cipolla added that Aguirre is currently retired.
Nipomo resident Mitch Flores, who said he dated Aguirre’s daughter about 13 years ago, said he knew Adam Aguirre and described him as friendly and outgoing.
“This is a shocker,” Flores said. “This is someone I’ve personally shaken the hand of many times.”
Flores said he was unaware of any daycare service at the Tefft residence but remembered the family has a young granddaughter and lots of children’s toys around. He said he remembered Aguirre “always being around” and didn’t know what his occupation was.
As of Tuesday, the Sheriff’s Office did not have any evidence that there are other victims but is asking for the public’s help in stepping forward with any other information by calling investigators at 781-4500.
