A 22-year-old motorist is in jail and his 19-year-old passenger is in critical condition following a solo car crash in Paso Robles early Sunday morning.
According to a Paso Robles Police Department news release, at approximately 1:24 a.m., emergency personnel arrived at the scene on Highway 46 East, just west of Golden Hill Road, to find a vehicle about 20 feet down a hill entangled in a chain-link fence. Firefighters and paramedics cut the fence away and freed the critically injured passenger from the wreckage using hydraulic rescue tools.
The passenger is identified as Andrew Phillip Kunz, 19, of Paso Robles. Kunz was taken to the trauma center at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo.
The driver of the vehicle, Paso Robles resident Isaac Daniel Byers, 22, was able to exit the vehicle on his own and was taken to Twin Cities Community Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries before being released and arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence causing injury.
