A Cayucos man is in critical condition after he was shot by a Santa Barbara County Sheriff's deputy Sunday night.
Jeremy Leon Bordegaray, 29, was arrested by deputies after he was allegedly found inside an unoccupied home in the 3200 block of Beach Club Drive near Carpinteria. The owner of the home, who was out of town, was alerted by a neighbor that someone was possibly trespassing at the residence. Three deputies responded to the homeowner's 911 call and found Bordegaray inside, according to a news release from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department. While investigating, they reportedly found a loaded handgun inside his backpack.
After he was handcuffed and put into the secured backseat of a patrol car, Bordegaray knocked out the Plexiglas partition and crawled into the front of the car, where there were several loaded firearms, according to the news release. He then allegedly tried to drive away.
Deputies ran after the car and a deputy fired several shots, according to the news release. Some of those shots hit Bordegaray.
Bordegaray remains in the hospital, according to authorities. He has been booked in absentia on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon against a peace officer, being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a controlled substance while armed with a firearm, possession with the intent to sell methamphetamine, a parole violation, trespassing, resisting arrest and providing false information to a peace officer.
The deputy who fired the shots has been placed on administrative leave, as is routine in such a case, according to the news release.
