Two Pismo Beach police officers suffered knife wounds to their hands on Tuesday afternoon after a fight with a man they were attempting to arrest in a local shopping center.
The officers, who were not identified, were taken to Arroyo Grande Community Hospital, police Cmdr. Jake Miller said.
The suspect, identified as Arthur Groneman, 36, was first taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center to be treated for superficial wounds before being transferred to San Luis Obispo County Jail and likely booked on two counts of attempted murder of peace officers, Miller said.
The officers responded to a report of a man with a backpack and a dog trespassing about 1 p.m. in the Pismo Coast Shopping Plaza at 555 Five Cities Drive. The second officer had arrived on scene just as the initial officer was about to place the suspect under arrest, likely on suspicion of trespassing, Miller said.
The suspect, however, resisted and a fight then ensued, according to a Pismo Police Department news release. During the struggle, police said, Groneman pulled a knife, and both officers suffered knife wounds on their hands before taking the him into custody. Further details about the incident and the weapon used are under investigation.
