A former Oakland Raiders and Cal Poly football coach was sentenced to 120 days in jail Monday for hitting another person on the head with a beer bottle at a Pismo Beach bar in August 2012.
In April, Randy Hanson was found guilty of felony battery and misdemeanor assault. Hanson resigned from his coaching job shortly after the incident.
On Monday, defense attorney Ilan Funke-Bilu tried unsuccessfully to have the felony battery charge reduced to a misdemeanor. He has already appealed Monday’s sentencing.
“We lost the battle,” he said. “We will win the war.”
Hanson is scheduled to start serving his time in jail on Aug. 23. Funke-Bilu said the court could postpone the start of the jail time pending the outcome of the appeal.
On Aug. 3, 2012, Hanson hit James Kelsey on the nose with a beer bottle in a limousine outside Harry’s Night Club & Beach Bar in Pismo Beach. Kelsey said the attack was unprovoked, but Hanson claimed he acted in self-defense.
