A 29-year-old transient was arrested Sunday by the San Luis Obispo Police Department for allegedly burglarizing Ben Franklin's Sandwiches and Padre Liquor & Groceries.
According to a news release from police, someone broke into Ben Franklin's around 5:42 a.m. Saturday and took cash. Surveillance video at Padre Liquor showed that around 5 a.m. Sunday three people forced open a door and stole lottery tickets, cigarettes and a Google tablet.
Around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, police were called by an employee of the Chevron gas station on Marsh Street because a man refused to leave the store and kept falling asleep, according to police.
The man, identified as Carmelo Colaccino, appeared to be under the influence of drugs, police said. Officers searched his backpack and found a hypodermic needle containing suspected methamphetamine. They also found cash, unscratched lottery tickets, cigarettes and a Google tablet in his backpack, police said.
Colaccino allegedly admitted to burglarizing Ben Franklin's and Padre Liquor. He also admitted, police say, to stealing a vehicle from Marsh Street and later dumping it on Chorro Street. Police located that car and returned it to the owner.
Colaccino was arrested on suspicion of being in possession of stolen property, two counts of commercial burglary and possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. Colaccino, who police say has spent time in Santa Cruz, Sanger and San Luis Obispo recently, was booked into County Jail in lieu of $60,000 bail.
Police are still looking for the other two people involved in the Padre Liquor burglary.
One person is described by police as possibly female, approximately 5 feet, 8 inches to 5 feet, 11 inches tall, with a medium or possibly heavy build, wearing a dark-colored, hooded sweatshirt, a light-colored bandana pulled over the nose and mouth, black gloves, jeans and black shoes, carrying a dark, solid print backpack.
The other is described as a white male adult in his mid-20s, 5 feet, 7 inches to 5 feet, 10 inches tall, with a thin build, wearing round-framed glasses, an oversized, checkered-pattern, dark-colored hooded sweatshirt with a thick, light-colored inner lining, a baseball cap with a flat brim, jeans, and dark-colored skater-type shoes.
