Authorities said Monday they are investigating a Sunday night shooting death in California Valley as a homicide.
Deputies responded about 7:50 p.m. to a 911 call at a home off Cucamonga Trail and Dorris Road, where they found Joseph King Cochran, 49, dead from a single shotgun wound, according to a San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office news release. Paramedics from the Cal Fire station in California Valley also responded but were unable to revive Cochran, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies determined that Cochran and the suspect, 55-year-old Gina Loret Mayborn, had an argument. Cochran lived in a trailer on or next to the property where Mayborn lives, according to the news release.Mayborn was booked into County Jail on suspicion of murder. She was being held there without bail as of Monday evening, according to jail records.
The shooting is the fourth suspected homicide in San Luis Obispo County this year. In May, 23-year-old Michael Bret Van Heuver of Los Osos was charged with murder after his 56-year-old mother died as a result of injuries she received during an assault in late April.
Never miss a local story.
There were two other incidents in April:
Sunni Jackson, 36, of Paso Robles, was arrested and charged with stabbing and beating her 61-year-old mother to death April 20. She was later found mentally incompetent to stand trial.
On April 22, 51-year-old Michael Walsh, an inmate at California Men’s Colony, was killed by another inmate. Prosecutors have not yet decided whether to file charges, San Luis Obispo County Chief Deputy District Attorney Jerret Gran said.
Prison officials would not release the suspect’s name or any details about the investigation, but The Tribune learned the suspect is inmate Roy David Summers, 47. He is serving a life sentence at the prison after being convicted in 1994 of first-degree murder in Southern California.
