Jesus Tamayo, 26, of Paso Robles was arrested on arson charges just after 2 a.m. Sunday for allegedly starting a garage fire on the 100th block of Santa Ynez Avenue.
Paso Robles police responded to the fire when dispatch received a 911 call regarding a possible suicidal subject. After calling the Paso Robles Fire Department for assistance, officers forced open a side door to the garage and saw Tamayo lighting rags on fire, police said. The inside of the garage was also ablaze.
Tamayo, who police say lives at the home, opened up the main garage door and tried to flee the scene before officers stopped him, police said. Tamayo was arrested for suspected arson of an inhabited structure. He was transported to San Luis Obispo County Jail where he remained Tuesday afternoon on an active hold without bail.
Police are still investigating the potential motives for starting the fire, as well as the attempted suicide claim. The 911 call was made from a relative who also lived at the residence, police said.
Firefighters put out the fire in less than 15 minutes. No injuries were reported. The estimated cost of damages has not yet been released.
