Two Morro Bay police officers suffered minor injuries during a struggle with a Paso Robles man suspected of being under the influence of drugs Thursday afternoon at the north Morro Rock parking lot.
Joseph Martin Speakman, 42, was arrested on suspicion of battery on a peace officer, a felony, as well as misdemeanor charges of threatening a peace officer, resisting a peace officer and being under the influence of a controlled substance, the Morro Bay Police Department said in a news release Friday.
At about 2:30 p.m, officers responded to the parking lot for a report of a man challenging others to fight. When contacted, Speakman struck one of the officers in the head, and a second officer suffered minor scrapes on his hands and face in the ensuing scuffle, Cpl. Mark Martin said.
Martin said the officers used their Tasers against Speakman both in self-defense and to restrain him.
Medical technicians responded to the scene to treat Speakman and the officers before Speakman was taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo and later booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail.
Martin said a motive for the attack is unknown, but witnesses at the scene — including families visiting the landmark — told officers the man made statements about wanting to get into a fight.
As of Friday morning, Speakman remained in custody in lieu of $10,000 bail.
