The Coast Union boys basketball team continued its unbeaten streak in Coast Valley League play Friday, Jan. 23, powering past Cuyama Valley 71-41 on the road.
Coast jumped out in front 19-9 in the first quarter and never looked back in their win over the Cuyama Valley Bears. Coach Bobby Youngs had a chance to play all his athletes, but among the starters, senior Gehrig Kniffen led with 22 points (he also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out four assists).
Auggie Johnson tallied 12 points, and Sam MacKinnon had nine rebounds.
On Tuesday, Jan. 27, Coast improved to 7-0 in the CVL by humbling North County Christian 66-28. Kniffen tallied 19 points, Jez Lawson had 15 points, and Nahum Hernandez grabbed nine rebounds.
The Broncos host second-place Valley Christian Academy at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30.
Coast Union 31, Cuyama Valley 22
The Coast Union varsity basketball team remained one game behind first-place Valley Christian Academy after defeating Cuyama Valley 31-22 on Friday, Jan. 23. Rima Panchal led Coast Union with 10 points on the road.
The game tilted in Coast’s favor in the first half, when the Lady Broncos outscored the Bears 17-9. Coast Union (5-1 in the Coast Valley League) hosts Valley Christian (6-0) in a 6:30 p.m. game Friday, Jan. 30.
Coming into this week, junior Reagan Kniffen led the team with 65 points on the season, followed by junior Panchal with 45, sophomore Ahtziri Mora with 43 and senior Crystal Nunez with 37, according to MaxPreps statistics.
The girls basketball B team at Santa Lucia Middle School got its first victory of the season on Thursday, Jan. 22, defeating the Cayucos Falcons 16-11. Point guard Alondra Mercado led the team with 10 points, four rebounds and three steals in the overtime win.
Jasmine Pena grabbed four rebounds and scored four points, Coach Cayley McDowell reported.
The A team didn’t fare so well against Cayucos, losing 44-4. Isabella Raethke was the top rebounder for the Warriors with 11.
The Warriors played at Templeton Middle School on Tuesday, Jan. 27.
