Junior Leticia Mercado scored a hat trick for the Lady Broncos varsity soccer team Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Midland High School, helping Coast to a 4-0 victory. The fourth goal was knocked in by senior Patti Bucio.
Coach Tamara Corbet said Mercado’s three goals marked the third time this season one of her players nailed a hat trick.
Things didn’t go quite as well for Coast Union on Friday, Jan. 23, at Dunn School, as the Earwigs nipped Coast 1-0. The only goal was scored following a red card infraction against the Lady Broncos.
In the Dunn game, Corbet was without the three injured starting players she has missed for several weeks now. The team was also without starting goalie Cynthia Cadena, who was suffering “a real bad headache,” Corbet said.
“We should have beaten Dunn,” she said, adding that it is possible the three injured players will be back in action for the next game.
The next home game for Coast is 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30 against Midland.
After losing to Dunn School 4-0 on the road Friday, Jan. 23, the boys varsity soccer team bounced back to defeat Cabrillo High School 5-0 at home on Monday, Jan. 26.
Junior forward Ricky Abitia scored a pair of goals, and Luis Alberto Lizaola and Gerardo Garcia each knocked in one goal during Monday’s shutout. Coach Luis Plasencia said the fifth goal was accidently scored for Coast by an opposing player after Bronco Adrian Gonzalez had moved the ball close to that goal.
That accidental goal was the first goal scored, and Plasencia said, “After that, the boys really started playing the game.”
Coast’s next home game is at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, against Midland.
