The Coast Union boys varsity soccer team edged a talented team from Liberty High School 1-0 on Saturday, Jan. 10, thanks to an overtime goal by forward Ricky Abitia. The win gave the Broncos a winning record for the season (7-6-1).
Abitia’s goal came courtesy of an assist by Danny Pena in the 95th minute of the contest. Roberto Quintero made six saves in goal for the Broncos.
The victory came a day after the Broncos shut out Dunn School 2-0, and Abitia contributed in that victory as well, scoring a goal in the 67th minute. Pedro Leonardo had the first goal for Coast Union, finding the net in the 36th minute. Quintero had three saves in goal for the Broncos.
Head Coach Luis Plasencia said “so far so good” when it comes to his team playing tight defense. “We have been playing well together as a team, and the players know that when they work as a team, it helps a lot.”
Plasencia organizes practices so every player “knows that he has to protect his own spot and be ready to help the other players. We have specific drills that help us attack on the sides and attack in the middle, too.”
The coach said last year’s team was a little loose when it came to showing up to practice on time and following instructions.
“This year they have been more responsible,” he said. “Except for the flu and other sicknesses, when they are healthy, everybody’s been real responsible.”
The next home soccer match for the boys will be at 4 p.m. Jan. 26 against Cabrillo High School of Lompoc.
The Lady Broncos defeated Dunn School 4-1 on Friday, Jan. 9, at Coast Union. The outstanding play of midfielder Paulina Torres (the junior scored three goals) led the way for Coast Union. Remy Corbet contributed a goal, and Fabby Gonzalez had three assists in the win.
On Saturday, Jan. 10, Liberty shut out the Lady Broncos 2-0. In that match, goaltender Cynthia Cadena put on a sterling effort by making 17 saves.
The team lost 1-0 on Monday January 12, at Lompoc High School. Head coach Tamara Corbet reported that Paulina Torres was injured in that game and unable to play. Corbet is also missing starters Martha Gomez and Ani Corbet because of injuries.
“We will need to make adjustments for the coming games,” she said.
The next home match for the Lady Broncos is Friday, Jan. 30. The start time against Midland High School is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
