The Coast Union varsity volleyball team continued its winning streak in the Coast Valley League last week, shutting out both Maricopa on Oct. 7 and Valley Christian Academy on Oct. 9 by 3-0 scores. The Lady Broncos were 6-0 in League play coming into this week.
In the Maricopa match, Gigi Stoothoff had seven kills and four aces as the Lady Broncos handled the Indians 25-9, 25-21 and 25-16. Patty Bucio came up big with 29 assists, and Janelle Bohey chipped in with seven kills. Reagan Kniffen and Diana Cisneros each had seven aces in that match.
Against Valley Christian Academy, Stoothoff had eight aces, seven digs and five kills; Kniffen contributed seven digs and seven aces, and Bucio had 23 assists.
The next home match for Coast Union is at 5 p.m. today (Thursday, Oct. 16). An alumni game is set for Friday, Oct. 17, at the Coast Union gym. The junior varsity will play against parents and faculty at 5:30 p.m., followed by a match between the varsity and alumni at 6:30. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and free to those 12 and younger.
Coast vs. Mission Prep
The Coast Union cross country team lost a dual meet 35-26 to Mission College Prep on Wednesday,
Oct. 8 on the Coast Union campus. Despite the loss, Coach Ayen Johnson said, 14 of the 17 Coast Union competitors recorded personal best times.
The top five finishers for the Broncos were: Jez Lawson (18:04); Paul Butterfield (19:37); Nick Roper (19:49); Oliver Fend (19:50); and Vicente Cueva (22:10).
Other runners’ times: Will Stephenson (22:18); Roberto Cueva (22:40); Zander Stoothoff (23:19); Sam MacKinnon (23:50); Sage Deack (24:19); Tyler Seng (24:43); Jack MacKinnon (24:39); David Nolan and Alam Romo (26:09); and Nic Barth (28:56).
On the girls side, Gigi Stoothoff came in with a time of 21:08, and Cammie Tatham finished in 24:38.
The next meet for Coast Union is Cal Poly Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 18.
