The Magnuson brother-sister pitching act played out for the third time this season as senior Grant and sophomore Ellie both notched wins on Thursday, May 16, this time against Valley Christian Academy in Santa Maria.
Grant, whose Broncos needed to defeat the Lions to clinch the Coast Valley League (CVL) title, struck out 10 and allowed just four hits in the 5-2 Bronco victory.
Ellie, whose Lady Broncos did not need to win against the Lady Lions, gave up just three hits, struck out two and, thanks to five runs her team scored in the third inning, came home with a 6-1 win. Coast Union finished the CVL with an 8-0 record.
In that 5-2 title-clinching win, senior Emmany Godinez chipped in with a pair of hits, scored two runs and stole two bases. Magnuson contributed a pair of doubles, knocked in a run and scored a run, and junior Gehrig Kniffen had two RBI on two hits.
Magnuson finished the regular season with a 6-2 record and a miniscule 1.94 ERA, with 46 strikeouts in 39-2/3 innings.
The Broncos had wrapped up the CVL season with a 10-0 record with Dunn School came to Cambria on Friday, May 16, to play a make-up game. Back on April 26 the Dunn Earwigs nipped the Broncos in Los Olivos, 11-10, thanks in part to a dozen walks issued by Bronco pitching.
But on May 16 junior Jake McAvoy allowed no walks and struck out five in seven innings to lead his team to a 10-4 win. McAvoy finished the regular season with an impressive 2.90 ERA, striking out 35 in 41 innings pitched. McAvoy also knocked in a pair of runs and scored a run.
Godinez and Quinten Raethke each had two RBIs against the Earwigs as the Broncos, who trailed 4-3 going into the fifth inning, tallied five runs to take a lead they would not give up.Home baseball playoff game Friday
