Entering a CIF Southern Section playoff match without long-time, highly successful Head Coach Pam Kenyon at the helm, the Lady Broncos nonetheless polished off the visiting Upland Christian Eagles, 3-0 on Tuesday night, Nov. 12, at home.
Coached by junior varsity mentor Cassie Page, the Lady Broncos defeated the Eagles 25-15, 25-22, 25-18, thanks to strong defense and outstanding play by Itzel Saavedra (seven kills) and Cristina Plasencia (eight digs).
The Lady Broncos (playing in CIF Division 5AA) were awarded a playoff opportunity based on their 8-2, second place final standing in the Coast Valley League. Coastal Christian placed first in the league with a record of 11-1; their only loss (1-3) came at the hands of Coast Union on Oct. 15.
The Eagles — 13-12 on the season and 7-5 in the Arrowhead League — had a four and a half hour, 270-mile trip from Rancho Cucamonga to play the Lady Broncos. Coast Union plays at Santa Clarita Christian today, Nov. 14, in round two of the playoffs.
Never miss a local story.
Kenyon, who has coached volleyball at Coast Union for more than 20 years — and teaches science and PE — is ill and unable to resume coaching duties at this time.
