The Lady Bronco junior varsity volleyball team placed third among 10 teams at the Nipomo High School JV Tournament on Saturday.
The tourney included JV teams from Paso Robles, Atascadero, Nipomo, San Luis Obispo, Mission Prep, St. Joseph, Arroyo Grande, Cabrillo, Coast and Pioneer Valley.
After working through the loser’s bracket, Coast Union made the semifinals, only to lose to San Luis Obispo’s JV team, 25-22. How did they manage to do so well when most of the competition had taller players?
“They played with so much heart,” said JV coach Casey Page. “We don’t have any height. We were going up against tall girls from big schools, but we were playing really good defense, not letting anything hit the court.
Never miss a local story.
“Their hearts were totally in it,” Page said. “We’ve been working on clean serves and defense, but what also mattered Saturday was passion. The other teams were saying, ‘Oh, it’s just Cambria this will be easy,’ but our girls had so much heart and so much passion. We almost made it to the finals.”
The next home match for the JV is against Mission Prep, Oct. 18, at 3:30 p.m.; the varsity plays at 5, right after the JV match.
