The Coast Union baseball squad hit a bump in the road last Saturday, April 27, at the Dunn School in the Santa Ynez Valley. The good news is that the Dunn (9-3) game was not a league game — the Broncos have a matchless 7-0 record in the Coast Valley League — but the other news is that Coast was handed a stinging 12-3 defeat.
Junior hurler Quentin Raethke gave up 8 earned runs; he walked 6 and struck out 5 Dunn Earwigs in 5 - 1/3 innings to take the loss. Junior Grant Magnuson pitched 1-2/3 innings; walked 2 and struck out 3 in relief of Raethke. At the plate Magnuson led the team 3 of the 9 hits that Coast mustered.
Overall coming into this week the Broncos are 8-6 and they are in first place in the Coast Valley League. Tuesday, Coast nipped Orcutt, 4-3, on a 9th inning score by Quentin Raethke; Grant Magnuson used 133 pitches for the win.
Leading the team in hitting thus far is Raethke, with a .425 average, 17 hits and 14 runs knocked in. Raethke has a 3.82 ERA while pitching for the Broncos. Not far behind is junior Emmany Godinez with a .422 batting average, 19 hits and a team-leading 22 runs scored. It’s no surprise Godinez leads in stolen bases (he has swiped 19 bases in 20 attempts) given that he is the speediest player on the team.
Freshman Lane Sutherland is hitting a cool .400 with 12 hits in 30 at-bats; he has scored 16 runs and has 10 RBI. Sophomore Gehrig Kniffen leads the team in runs batted in with 15; Kniffen has a solid .368 batting average and has a pair of sacrifice flies, the team high in that category. First baseman Tommy Howard (a junior) is hitting .378 with 14 hits and 9 RBI.
Junior Grant Magnuson is hitting .359 with 14 hits, 10 RBI, and he has a 3.15 ERA — and is 2-2 — while doing mound duty.
The Broncos play at home Friday, May 3, against Shandon. That game will be broadcast live on KTEA-FM (103.5).
