The Lady Broncos participated in the “Battle of the Bats” tournament at Orcutt Academy on Friday, April 5, and Saturday, April 6, and — after losing a squeaker (11-9) in the Friday opener against Orcutt Academy — Coast Union handled Maricopa (13-8) later in the day.
On Saturday, Coast Union dominated the Providence High School Pioneers from Burbank, 19-0, to come away from the tournament in second place with a 2-1 record. The team is 3-1 in the Coast Valley League coming into this week.
The loss to Orcutt can be largely chalked up to shaky defense; in fact, while Coast Union out-hit Orcutt 10-8, the Lady Broncos committed 11 errors in that game, which makes it very hard even for a potent offense — which the Lady Broncos certainly have — to catch up.
To wit, Coast went out in front 3-0 in the first inning and added a run in the second and third, but thanks in part to those defensive miscues, Orcutt tallied six in the third, four in the fourth and another in the fifth, enough to hold off the visitors from Cambria.
Junior Cristina Plasencia collected three hits (a single, double, and triple), scored two runs and drove in one; freshman Ellie Magnuson had two hits and three RBI; and senior Gabby Bucio picked up a single and a double and drove in two runs.
Later Friday in the Maricopa game, sophomore Patty Bucio, her sister Gabby, freshman Maddie May, and sophomore Sage Radecki each collected a pair of hits.
Plasencia drove in three runs and freshman Janelle Bohey and Magnuson each drove in a pair of runs.
In the Saturday game against Providence, Patty Bucio and May each drove in three runs for Coast Union. Plasencia went three-for-four and scored three runs; Magnuson pitched a two-hitter and struck out five in five shutout innings.
On the season (coming into this week), Patty Bucio leads the team in stolen bases (18) and has the highest batting average on the team (.433), but Plasencia is just four percentage points behind Bucio with a solid .429.
Plasencia leads the team with 15 hits (two of them home runs) and is tied with Gabby Bucio with 19 runs batted in.
Magnuson is hitting at a .406 clip with 13 hits, has scored 10 runs and has 14 RBI; she has pitched 57 innings for Coast Union, striking out 65 and walking 16. Her ERA is 4.11 and of the 889 pitches she has thrown, 609 were strikes.
Sophomore Remy Corbet is tied with May with a .321 batting average. Corbet has 15 stolen bases, second on the team, and has drawn the most walks on the team, 15.
Fellow sophomore Sage Radecki has scored 19 runs, has 10 RBI, and has belted a home run.
The next home game for Coast Union is at 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 12, against Cuyama Valley High School.
