When the Coast Union football team took the long bus ride down to Carpinteria on Friday, Sept.18, to play the always-tough Cate Rams, they faced more than one challenge. Cate is one of the finest teams in the Condor League of eight-man teams, so that was one looming mountain to climb.
The other significant test for Coast Union was playing without four of their varsity starters: Lane Sutherland, Jack MacKinnon, Jimmy Welch, and Adrian Gonzalez, all of whom were ill and did not suit up.
While the Broncos played with as much energy and skill as they could muster under the circumstances, they were pushed around by the Rams and dropped their third straight lopsided game, 55-13.
Late in the game, when the Cate coaching staff inserted backup players, the Broncos began to pick up yardage. Unofficially, Alam Ramirez gained 47 yards in the contest and made three tackles. In the fourth quarter, Danny Corona scored touchdowns on runs of 14 and 7 yards, enabling the Broncos to avoid a shutout. Roberto Quintero hit on one of two point-after kicks for Coast.
Never miss a local story.
Riley Kennedy led all defenders for Coast (unofficially) with nine tackles, and he recovered a Cate fumble. Alexis Mireles returned to his quarterback position — after sitting out with an injury last week against Laguna Blanca — and although he was under fierce pressure by the Rams defense, he held his own and got away from the rush several times to avoid the sack.
Things don’t get any easier this week for the Broncos, as they travel to Santa Maria to play Orcutt Academy, which is always well stocked with talent. The Spartans are 4-0 after beating Downey Calvary Chapel 37-8 on Sept. 18.
The Spartans manhandled Fresno Christian 55-6 on Aug. 28; and when the Eagles came to Coast Union on Sept. 4, they handed the Broncos a 38-8 defeat.
When Coast opens its Coast Valley League schedule with a game against Shandon on Oct. 9, fans can expect to see a far more competitive Bronco squad.
