Paul Butterfield finished second overall and first among the Coast Union cross-country runners Saturday, Sept. 5, in the annual 5K fundraising run for the American Field Service.
Butterfield, who made the Freshman All-County High School Cross Country Team last year, finished Saturday in 18 minutes, 42 seconds. A total of 51 runners took part in the run.
Coming in second for the Broncos and sixth overall was Nick Roper at 21:43; Will Stephenson (21:52) came in third among the Broncos and seventh overall; and Ethan Walters (21:52) tied with Stephenson for fourth among the Broncos and was eighth overall.
Gigi Stoothoff (22:41) was the fifth Bronco and first female to finish; she finished 12th overall.

David Nolan (22:45) came in sixth among Broncos and 13th overall; and Davis May (23:04) finished 15th overall.
Other Bronco runners: Tyler Seng (24:51), Jazmin Kelleher (25:58), Sam MacKinnon (26:02), Vanessa Ramirez (28:07), Iveth De Jesus (28:35) and Cesar Hernandez (29:37). The overall winner of the race was Pepe Gonzalez, who came in at 17:26.
The run raised about $100 for the American Field Service, according to cross-country co-coach Jim Hurley.
The next competition for Coast Union is Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Morro Bay Invitational.
Coast 3, Santa Maria 1
The Coast Union varsity volleyball team got off to a good start on its preseason schedule by winning at Santa Maria, 3-1, on Wednesday, Sept. 2. Coast won 25-23, 18-25, 25-20 and 25-23.
The Lady Broncos were led by Janel Bohey, who had 14 kills and 11 digs. Gigi Stoothoff chipped in with a dozen kills and 20 assists. Reagan Kniffen had 13 digs to lead the team, and Xue DiMaggio powered four aces over the net.
On Tuesday, Sept. 8, the Coast hung tough with Nipomo but lost 3-2 at home. The two teams traded sets (18-25, 25-21, 18-25, 25-17) but Nipomo won the fifth set 15-11. DiMaggio (10 kills, 10 digs, two blocks) and Bohey (nine kills, 16 digs) led Coast Union’s effort. Stoothoff added 18 digs, five kills and four aces.
