As a volunteer-run organization, we cannot always successfully respond to each report of stray cats and feral colonies with the alacrity some may wish. Sometimes we do succeed spectacularly, as in the case of Sami, a kitten profiled in our spring newsletter.
He was trapped in a stud bay, behind an electrical panel, all alone behind the pharmacy for several days after his litter mates had been rescued. The fire department was unable to free him, but one of our volunteers, informed of Sami’s distressful situation, by doing a little “cat fishing” in the dark, was finally able to lift this black kitten out. After some “R&R” at the shelter with his mom and siblings, he was adopted.
In fact, during the past few years, the volunteers at the Homeless Animal Rescue Team have made huge strides in modernizing and customizing the shelter and providing more life-enhancing amenities for the animals under our care. Now, in a far more visible location and better able to participate in town events, HART is a presence at Pinedorado, the Scarecrow Festival and the Christmas Market.
For our own fund-raising efforts this year (despite a tradition of rummage sales and daytime events held at the shelter), we have decided to go another way. A gala evening to mark HART’s 30th anniversary is being held at Camp Ocean Pines on Aug. 25 (see advertisement on Page 10 for details). As is common in this caring community, many, many folks in town are contributing to making this a success, in addition to the restaurants listed.

This will truly be a magical evening for the 100 lucky participants who will enjoy ocean views with live music and delectable appetizers on the patio, along with the wooden art hearts on offer. In the fireside lounge, guests can preview sample videos from our upcoming video festival (next spring) and view the live auction packages. Entering the dining room, the mood will be set by the woodsy yet sophisticated decor, candle-lit ambiance, tables embellished with linens and dressed with quirky but charming centerpieces and party favors, and service by a professional wait staff.
Throughout the evening, as part of a silent auction, guests will have the opportunity to bid on those original art hearts (of which two are among the last works of beloved Cambria artists); and preview, then bid on live auction packages, including travel destinations, spa items and visits, wines in both bottles and tastings, pet and garden goodies — a wonderful assortment of things.
The deadline for reservations is Aug. 17 (so participating chefs can get an accurate head count). There will be no tickets at the door for this inaugural event. Don’t miss this opportunity to indulge. Food, music, wine, art, views and — did we forget to mention? — lots of chocolate.
