An exhibition of new paintings by Tracy Sylvester Harris titled “Lost Holidays” will be on display at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art from May 15 through June 28.
Harris used anonymous snapshots found at flea markets, at yard sales and online as the basis for her colorful paintings. The museum describes them as depicting “fleeting moments of summer ... captured almost a lifetime ago.”
“The exciting challenge is to keep the paintings relevant and current even though the subjects come from another era,” Harris said.
“To avoid sentimentality, I keep the compositions bold and cropped, the artwork loose, drippy and rough, even pushing some areas into abstraction. …”
Never miss a local story.
Harris’ works were featured in the film “Face of Love,” starring Ed Harris and Annette Benning, released in 2013. Her work has been featured at solo exhibitions in New York, Santa Monica, Carmel and San Luis Obispo.
Harris is the daughter of Melanee Sylvester of Cambria, owner of the Melanee Sylvester Gallery at 724 Main St.
