The first order light at Piedras Blancas was lit Feb. 15, 1875, which means Piedras Blancas Light Station is 140 years old next month.
To celebrate, the light station is planning its 140th Birthday Celebration for 9:45 a.m. Feb. 14.
A special living history tour titled “Peek at the Past” will be offered, featuring tour guides in period attire and enactors portraying life at the light station in the 1890s. The tours last about two hours and include the historic structures, wildlife viewing and scenery along a half-mile interpretive trail.
The special tour is available for the regular tour fee of $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 6 to 17. Tours meet at the former Piedras Blancas Motel, 1½ miles north of the lighthouse gate (do not wait at the gate to the lighthouse). Organizers advise participants to arrive early for this popular tour.
