More than 60 participants paddled from San Simeon Cove to Leffingwell Landing on Saturday, Sept. 13, in the 2014 Pier-to-Point Fun Paddle and Ocean Race, a fundraiser for the North Coast Ocean Rescue Team.
According to NCOR member Richard Stacy, paddlers Todd Gailey and Emily Weatherby finished first at 65 minutes in a tandem kayak, John Davis on a stand-up paddle board came in at 68 minutes, and Andreas Modl followed seconds later. The last paddler clocked in at 125 minutes.
The morning began with heavy fog, but Stacy said visibility improved quickly.
Mike Hanchett and his crew from the Cavalier Oceanfront Resort restaurant in San Simeon provided the barbecue lunch. The Community Emergency Response Team provided coordination.
Never miss a local story.
"Without the help of CERT and the donation of food from Mike Hanchett," Stacy said, "the event would not be the great experience that it is." It "turned out to be a great success," he said, "and everyone had a lot of fun."
