Contribution cans to help keep Fourth of July fireworks shows sparkling in Cambria are popping up all over town like, well, a Roman candle firework going off.
“I’m coming back for the Fourth of July celebration,” said Thousand Oaks resident Bonnie Neuer who made Memorial Day’s first contribution at Cookie Crock Market.
“My father served in the Army,” she said. “I come to Cambria all the time.”
Store Director Stan Berry greeted Neuer. A member of American Legion Post No. 432, Berry served two tours as a plane captain for A-7E Corsairs aboard the aircraft supercarrier USS Kitty Hawk in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam conflict.
Never miss a local story.
Surveying the store’s checkout stands, he said the Cookie Crock’s five collection cans would remain in operation through July 4, Independence Day.
“We hope all Cambria residents stop by and make a contribution,” Berry said.
Store owner Del Clegg received the “Mel McColloch Merchant of the Year” community service award during the Cambria Memorial Day ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Building.
According to American Legion Post Commander Terry Farrell, it costs approximately $11,000 to produce the annual fireworks show. He noted that Paso Robles recently announced it would cancel its show this year because of lack of funds.
Other cash collection points in Cambria include All American Video, Among Friends, Bob & Jan’s Bottle Shop, Cambria Coffee Den, Cambria Drug & Gift, Cambria Chamber of Commerce, Corky’s Barbershop, Gym One, Heritage Oaks, Rabobank, Shell Gas, Soto’s Market, Cambria General Store, True Value Hardware and the Village Bean.
Cambria’s Independence Day festivities will be an all-day affair of fun, food, games, live music, competition, and prizes at Shamel Park. The fireworks show will begin when night falls around 9 p.m.
American Legion Post No. 432 sponsors the annual event. The post is a registered nonprofit, tax-exempt organization. Contributions are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Checks should be payable to American Legion Post 432 and specify July 4 fireworks. For other contributions, contact Farrell at 924-1814.
