The nation’s largest marine sanctuary needs volunteers to fill some seats on its advisory council.
The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is accepting applications for advisory council members to represent business and industry, commercial fishing, recreational fishing, research, recreation and conservation, and two at-large seats.
The sanctuary stretches along 276 miles of coastline from Cambria to north of San Francisco, encompassing 6,094 square miles of ocean.
The council, with 20 voting members, represents the public’s interests in sanctuary matters and provides advice to the sanctuary superintendent. The council was established in 1994.
Candidates will be selected based on their expertise and experience in relation to the seat for which they are applying, community and professional affiliations, and knowledge regarding the protection and management of marine resources.
The application deadline is Friday, Nov. 23. Jackie Sommers, council coordinator, can provide forms and details. More information is available at http://1.usa .gov/ RFFVMg.
